ICANNs new gTLDs
Due to some over committing and actually having to do day job work, I haven't written much here recently. So I thought I'd change that :-)
Last week I got interviewed by a Swedish news paper on ICANNs work on introducing more gTLDs. I remain highly skeptical to this. I have not seen a compelling case as to why we need more TLDs (besides ccTLDs) and what value they would actually provide.
I can see that a lot of people with interests in the domain industry can see value in introducing the new TLDs as operating and charging for them is part of their core business, but I see little or no problems that needs to solved. I don't see a benefit to end users or organizations, and I don't see what we gain that we don't have to today, except introducing a lot more operational risks and new ground for domain squatters and phishing attacks.
New gTLDs will also rise the cost for trademark protection for many enterprises with a global reach. I doubt that users will go to any other web-site than the .com address anyway....
